So I guess I'm into aquariums now
30 years ago, I had a 55-gallon aquarium, and I really loved that thing. I was trying to keep a community tank and enjoyed it quite a bit. Alas, life happened, and I had to get rid of the tank. Fast forward to last year, when I finally got the urge to set up a gifted 10-gallon aquarium. As of this writing, I now own two 10-gallon tanks, three 20-gallon tanks, and a 75-gallon tank. Rachelle would say this is my latest hyperfixation; she's not wrong.
I love freshwater tropical community tanks the best. There are many types of aquatic creatures, and they're at all different levels of the aquarium. Watching fish, snails, and shrimp in a little slice of nature is very relaxing. Learning which fish can coexist and how to grow aquatic plants is challenging but also rewarding.
I tend to be attracted to hobbies that have many options for gear and equipment, and man, fishkeeping as a hobby certainly has lots of options. These last few months have taught me there are many different ways to successfully keep fish alive. There are minimalist methods like The Walstad Method, which try to build a complete little ecosystem with no water filtration. Some people like to focus on nano tanks. Some people like very large aquariums with high-tech filtration systems. There are planted nature tanks, and then there are the classic colorful-gravel-and-plastic-decor tanks. Some people are old school, while some are new school.
I find it very rewarding to find my own way by trying and iterating on things. I intend to document my journey here on my site, so if you start seeing more content about fish tanks, well, now you know why.
Do you have or keep an aquarium? What's been your experience?
