How to set the open and close limits on Aqara E1 curtain driver

I recently got my hands on a couple of Aqara E1 curtain drivers, and since I use Home Assistant, I skipped buying the Aqara hub. Instead, I had to figure out how to set the open and close limits manually, using the buttons on the device, rather than through the Aqara app.

The process turned out to be trickier than I expected because the instructions weren’t super clear. After spending some time experimenting and reading through this helpful forum post, I finally got it working. Now, I want to save you (and future me) some time by walking you through the steps I used.

My Setup

I’m using ZHA for integration, and I’ve mounted both curtain drivers with the buttons facing outward.

How to Set the Open and Close Limits on the Aqara E1

I found these steps worked best for me.

1. Reset the previous limits: Press the button 5 times quickly. This clears any previous settings. You should hear one long beep.
2. Move the driver to the closed position: Position the driver on the rail at the desired closed position, with the curtain fully closed. I found it easiest to double press the button to unlock it from the rail in order to move it to the correct spot and then double press it again to re-lock.
3. Set the closed position: Triple press the button to set the closed position. You should hear one long beep. If you hear two short beeps instead, the old limits weren't cleared, so go back to step 1.
4. Open the curtain: Pull the curtain a few inches towards the open position until it starts to run on its own. It will run until it hits resistance and stop. You should hear one long beep to indicate the open position is now set.

And that's it! If everything worked, your Aqara E1 should now open and close to the positions you just set. If you run into any issues or the limits don't seem to stick, feel free to reach out.
