RIP Sir Patrick Stewart
2 min read
Many people in my circles are writing about the death of Patrick Stewart right now. I hate to just go along, but I must write about this.
I knew this day would come, and I've thought of it occasionally. That must sound weird but I can explain. Historically, when a celebrity would pass away, there was a huge outpouring of grief, but I've never felt it the way others seem to. I wasn't that fazed when Michael Jackson died, for example. I was sad for his friends and family, and I knew it was significant, but I didn't think about it much. But in those moments, I knew the celebrity death that would rock me was Captain Picard.
Star Trek: The Next Generation is my Star Trek, and without Patrick Stewart, there is no Star Trek: TNG. I have very fond memories of looking forward to Fridays because that's when the new episode of Star Trek was on, along with X-Files. Add the 2 for $5 deli pizzas from Kroger, and you're looking at a good time, according to 20-year-old me.
I don't have any other personal anecdotes that anyone other than me would find that interesting. I never met the man in person, though I know he was well regarded and respected. Still, I think I probably loved him as much as a person can love someone without having met them. I feel the world is a little sadder and darker without Patrick Stewart in it.
Rest in peace.
