Congrats to the Knicks, and some thoughts on the modern NBA
2 min read
Good morning y'all.
I saw that the Knicks won the NBA Championship. Rachelle and I actually watched part of games 3 and 4 mostly because Rachelle likes Mamdani. It's the first time I've really watched NBA basketball since Michael Jordan retired from the Bulls. Since I'm now an expert on the modern NBA game after having watched two partial games, I thought I'd share my impressions.
I was surprised by how physical the players were being. I'm unsure if that's just the way the games are being refereed for this series or if that's just how it works now but man it seemed more physical without fouls being called than I ever remembered.
There was way more 3 point shooting than I remember from back in the day. I only watched two partial games, but it also struck me how few set offenses there were. It's almost just fast break basketball all the time. There would be streaks where they'd all run down, stand around the 3 point line and miss, then go to the other side and do it again.
Not related to the modern vs old NBA game but this is also the first time seeing Wembanyama play. I've only seen highlights until these two games but I think he will eventually be a force of nature in the NBA. His physical dimensions are just so crazy but they need to let him cook.
I didn't notice any of this in the two games I watched but I've seen a few videos about how different the traveling rules are now. Honestly, all the 3 point shooting combined with the traveling rules are the main reasons I've not watched any NBA recently. Plus, I don't really have a team to root for. I followed the Bulls back in the 90s because I was 18 years old and Michael Jordan was the best player. But now I'm not drawn to any particular team. I live in Richmond, VA so the closest NBA team is the Washington Wizards. I can follow an underdog, as attested by my love of the Tennessee Titans, but I just don't know anything about the Wizards.
Well, wait a minute. Washington Wizards is alliterative and I like that. Plus, I like Wizard as in the fireball throwing types... hmmm... maybe I'm on to something here!
Anywho, as an old Bulls fan, it's pretty weird for me to say this but congratulations to the Knicks. Rachelle and I are glad Mamdani is a thing and we're glad the Knicks won. Go NY!
PS. If you're wondering what the hell a Knickerbocker is, well you're in luck because this came across my feed this morning: Knickerbocker
